20 rows  · In a move that was extremely controversial, the New Jersey Highway Department (now NJDOT) moved to buy the right-of-way of the Boonton Branch between Paterson and Totowa, New Jersey, for Interstate 80 from the Erie Lackawanna. The highway department approached EL management with an offer of $2 million if the railroad agreed to completely sever the route.

On October 1, 1960, the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad (DL&W) and Erie Railroad merged to form the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad. In 1963, the old DL&W Boonton Branch was abandoned between Mountain View and Paterson and its right of way was sold for the new Interstate 80 and the current-day New Jersey Route 19 .

We all know that the Lackawanna’s original Boonton Line was cut off through Paterson in 1963; the Erie-Lackawanna and the State of New Jersey short-sightedly deciding that a single track parallel to the new I-80 was not needed, and paying the railroad $2 mm to go away.

A trip up the branch at Mt. View (not sure if this was the right spot. just off Rt 23, near Wayne.
